Dr Timothy Steel is one of Sydney’s leading neurosurgeon and spine surgeons with more than 21 years experience as a consultant neurosurgeon. Much of his time as a neurosurgeon has been spent at the leading edge of spine surgery in Australia, Helping people obtain a better quality of life. Dr Steel became a consultant neurosurgeon and minimally invasive spine surgeon at the prestigious St Vincent’s Private and Public Hospitals in 1998 after he underwent 10 years of surgical training and internship at some of the finest hospitals in Australia, the United State of America and England.
He has a well-deserved reputation for a meticulous approach to his surgeries; with careful and precise surgical techniques and individual surgical planning. He has extensive surgical experience allowing him to tailor his surgical recommendations to ensure the optimal result for each patient. Dr Steel is the first surgeon in Australia to perform percutaneous fusion surgery using image fusion stereotaxy. He was the first to perform spinal cord stimulation for patients with severe chest pain due to angina. He was the first surgeon in Australia to perform bilateral nerve compression procedures using a minimally invasive approach. He was the first surgeon in Australia to implant the cervical artificial disc for acute spinal cord compression.
He is active in training neurosurgery trainees and registrars through his own spine surgery fellowship programme. He has more than 100 national and international presentations and publications in referee journals to his credit. He continues his research and development of the techniques of minimally invasive and percutaneous spine surgical techniques and continues to perform disc replacement and spine fusion surgery.
He was initially exposed to minimally invasive and percutaneous spine surgery in the USA after completing his Australian training in 1995. Recognising the benefits to patients of minimally invasive spine surgery, on his return to Australia Dr Steel has continued to refine this technique. He has been responsible for teaching many neurosurgical trainees the principles and practices of a range of minimally invasive spine procedures. He has now been performing MISS decompression and fusion procedures for some years and presented his experience with percutaneous pedicle screw fixation to the 2010 Spine Society of Australia meeting.
